8-year-old Monica Lynn Still Smoking, of the Blackfeet Nation, was kid*apped from outside her school in Browning, Montana on December 17th, 1979. Her body was found by her family on December 31st, 1979. Her case remains open and unsolved.
On December 17th, 1979, Monica was kidn*pped from outside the Napi Elementary School in Browning, Montana. Schoolmates say she may have been picked up by an unknown car. Extensive searches were conducted by Monica’s family members and 15 days later, after a hunter found a boot in the area, her body was found by her uncle Donny during a search in Glacier National Park, about 14 miles west of Browning, at 2 pm. She was frozen in the snow, still wearing the clothing she was last seen in. It’s very unlikely that Monica walked that distance on her own. Cause of d*ath was determined to be exposure and there were no outer injuries found. It’s believed that the FBI mishandled Monica’s case and only investigated for three short weeks.
In a newspaper article Monica’s mother says someone saw Monica fall in the school hallway the day she disappeared and an unidentified teacher carried her to the eastern entrance of the elementary school. It’s unknown if the events are related, however, Melba Wells, Monica’s mother, said no one from the school came to Monica’s funeral.
Monica, who was born June 2nd, 1972 in Montana, is remembered by her family who are still working on finding justice for her. Her cousins, MMIP advocates now, grew up hearing stories about Monica and how she had one brown eye and one green eye. Monica was also deaf in one ear but did not wear a hearing aid. Monica is described as an honest child who loved going to church and helping to care for her grandmother.
